Nuevo Vallarta fishing report for February 2024

As February unfolds in Nuevo Vallarta, reflecting on the exciting winter months gone by brings a smile to my face. January treated us to some thrilling rod-bending action amidst fantastic weather, incredible fishing, and some amazing catches.  A trend that seamlessly continued into February. The pelagic fish have graciously lingered throughout the winter, with morning temperatures dipping to a cool 63 degrees, only to rise to a perfect 76 in the afternoon. It amuses me to see locals donning jackets in what I consider mild 63-degree weather during my commute to work. These temperature patterns have persisted over the past few weeks and are expected to continue into February. Let’s delve into the recent catches and anticipate what February has in store for fishing enthusiasts in Nuevo Vallarta.Nuevo Vallarta fishing report February

This February, we are witnessing unusually warm water at 76 degrees, a condition that has attracted mahi-mahi and sailfish to our area. Our offshore eight-hour fishing charters have been incredibly successful. However, the water cooling slightly has tempered the action for blue and black marlin, compensating with a surge in striped marlin activity. February is an excellent time to be in Nuevo Vallarta, not just for fishing but also for snorkeling, exploring the city, whale watching, and sightseeing. Baitfish such as skipjack tuna, google eye, Spanish mackerel, mahi-mahi, for roosterfish, and sailfish are becoming more abundant.

For those planning to fish with us in February, it’s advisable to make reservations in advance as we are experiencing high demand during these winter months. Many anglers are eager to escape the snow-shoveling routine and enjoy the perfect weather and exceptional fishing opportunities. This is an ideal time for bay fishing, which has been extraordinary. Some days, we can’t keep the California bonita and Spanish mackerel off the hook. The conditions are expected to remain consistent through March, with a slight increase in winds that won’t disrupt bay fishing.

If you’re seeking a family-friendly excursion, a 4-6 hour bay fishing trip could be the perfect choice. Check our website for prices and boat options. Offshore fishing will remain consistent until March, when a slight uptick in winds may necessitate a shift in tactics. Live bait and rigged black Bart lures have proven effective, with black Barts on the short corner and Joel Schultz tuna lures for marlin, sailfish, and mahi-mahi.
