Greetings from the docks of beautiful Nuevo Vallarta! This is Capt. Pete, and I’m bringing you the official March 2026 fishing outlook for what I consider to be some of the most productive waters on the planet. If you’re heading down our way this month, you are in for a serious treat.
Between the world-class hospitality of our local community and the perfect “goldilocks” weather—warm enough for shorts, but with those cool afternoon breezes that keep you refreshed—there is simply no better place to be for Spring Break. But more importantly, March is widely recognized by locals as one of the best months for fishing in Nuevo Vallarta because it is a “transition month.” You get the best of both worlds: the tail end of the winter species and the early arrival of the summer giants. In March, you can catch just about anything the ocean has to offer. We have some of the most competitive fishing rates in Nuevo Vallarta fishing.
Why March is the “Holy Grail” for Sport Fishing Nuevo Vallarta
As we move further into March, we are seeing incredible transitions in the water. Things are heating up (literally and figuratively), and if you’ve been waiting for the “big ones” to show up, your patience is about to pay off.
In our latest Nuevo Vallarta fishing reports, we’ve noted that the water temperature is hitting that sweet spot. This temperature spike acts like a dinner bell for the heavy hitters. We aren’t just looking at one species; we are looking at a full-blown buffet. From the acrobatic Sailfish to the brute strength of the Yellowfin Tuna, March in Mexico is when the magic happens.
The Target List: Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, and Mahi-Mahi
If you are booking one of our Nuevo Vallarta fishing charters, you likely have a “bucket list” fish in mind. In March, we can usually check all of them off:
-
Marlin: We are starting to see the arrival of the big boys. Black and Blue Marlin are moving into our local grounds, drawn by the warming currents. These are the fish that make your reel scream and your adrenaline spike.
-
Yellowfin Tuna: The Tuna are active and hungry. We find them offshore, often following the dolphin pods or congregating around the deep-sea banks.
-
Sailfish: Known as the “ballerinas of the sea,” Sailfish are plentiful in March. Their spectacular leaps and incredible speed make them a favorite for both novice and experienced anglers.
-
Mahi-Mahi (Dorado): These golden-green beauties are always a crowd-pleaser. Not only are they one of the hardest-fighting fish pound-for-pound, but they also make for the best fish tacos you’ll ever taste back at the dock.

The Secret Sauce: Bait Movement in Banderas Bay
One of the most surprising things newcomers notice is how quickly the “bait balls” can pop up. In the world of deep sea fishing Nuevo Vallarta, finding the bait is 90% of the battle. During March, we see massive schools of diverse baitfish—sardines, goggle-eyes, and flying fish—entering the bay and moving just offshore.
I tell my clients all the time: I look for many factors—water clarity, moon phases, and temperature—but the number one factor is bait movement. Everything’s gotta eat, and the big trophy fish are no exception. If we find the bait, we find the fish. The trick we’ve mastered over the last 40 years is timing that bait movement with the tides. When you hit that incoming or outgoing tide right on top of a bait ball, the action is absolutely electric.
Choosing Your Adventure: The 8-Hour Sweet Spot
With so many options—from bay fishing and bottom fishing to overnight offshore grinds—it can be tough to choose. However, my personal favorite for March is our 8-hour fishing trip. We offer some of the most competitive rates in the region for high-end sport fishing Nuevo Vallarta.
-
The First Half: We start inside the bay, checking the local hotspots for action and warming up the rods.
-
The Blast Offshore: Then, we head out to the deeper water looking for those line-stripping Sailfish and Marlin.
-
The Backup Plan: If the Marlin are being shy, we pivot. We’ll hit the reefs for Snapper, Amberjack, and the sought-after Roosterfish (which are peaking this month!).
40 Years of Expertise & Safety
We’ve been doing this for four decades. Whether you’re a first-timer who needs help choosing the right boat or a seasoned pro looking for a 4-day offshore expedition, we’ve got the gear and the know-how to make it happen. My philosophy has always been simple: If we can’t catch it, you don’t want to hook it.
I also want to reassure our guests that Nuevo Vallarta is one of the safest and most beautiful places on Earth. Our streets are clean, our security is top-notch, and our community is built on welcoming visitors. It is the perfect environment for you and your family to relax and enjoy the trip of a lifetime.
The beer is cold, the sun is out, and the fish are hungry. My crew and I are ready to show you why we love this life.
Tight lines,
The Puerto Vallarta fishing report
