This September’s Nuevo Vallarta fishing update began with a continuation of the fishing trends observed last month. The abundance of marlin, sailfish, and mahi-mahi are once again making their presence felt in our fishing grounds inshore and offshore. The weather has remained ideal, marked by a few offshore storms. Many anglers may not be aware that September is one of Nuevo Vallarta’s prime fishing months. This is due to a combination of factors. First, the reduced number of visitors as schools has resumed in both the United States and Mexico. Second, the increased influx of bait into our bay and offshore fishing hot spots. As my fishing reports consistently emphasize, tracking the bait trail is key; being on top of the bait ensures success in catching fish here in Mexico. Another factor is the continuation of longer summer days, with the sun rising at 6:30 AM and setting around 7:30 PM in September. This extended daylight provides ample time to pursue various types of fish. Dorados, sailfish, marlin, tuna, and other game fish thrive in the bay of Nuevo Vallarta during this month. Now, let’s dive into our September fishing locations.
Presently, the bay fishing hotspot is in Nuevo Vallarta. Right here in the bay. Fantastic fishing for four to six hours. The south side of the bay, encompassing areas like Los Arcos, Quimixto, Los Amimas, and Yelapa, consistently yields excellent results in September. You should count on 6 hours when fishing the south shore. When setting up the appropriate bait spread for the bay’s diverse fish population, you might even encounter billfish finning behind our baits. This happens more than people think, so a sharp eye on the short corner is crucial. Marlin and sailfish sometimes surprise us by striking at a black bart lure or even a sewn-up mullet bait.
An interesting fact is that sailfish exhibit a preference for the south side of the bay during a full moon. Opinions on the influence of a full moon are divided among fishermen—some appreciate it, while others are less of it. Personally, I remain neutral on this matter, as I’ve experienced both remarkable and less impressive fishing days during full moons. Feel free to share your
thoughts on the full moon debate below the report. Take a moment to read what others have said about our services.
On the north side of the bay, opportunities abound for catching yellowtail (occasionally in schools), Spanish mackerel, skipjack tuna, mahi-mahi, and even roosterfish. Our departures from Nuevo often lead us to the La Cruz to Punta Mita area, showcasing a variety of favored fishing spots along the bay’s coastline. One standout location is Palo Verde, which consistently delivers surprises ranging from snapper to sailfish in September. Extra live bait is advisable in this part of the bay, as fish schools are known to gather during this month. In September, we’re always ready to head offshore for deep-sea fishing around Labor Day. Various offshore destinations, such as El Morro, will be targeted. El Morro’s proximity to Nuevo Vallarta and its abundant bait and reefs attract sailfish, marlin, amberjack, and mahi-mahi. This offshore location can be reached within an 8-hour trip, and it has proven productive for catching roosterfish and amberjack. I’ve even landed substantial marlin here in September, utilizing small tuna or larger bonitas weighing 5 to 10 pounds as baits . Imagine hooking up a marlin on a ten-pound bait with a fight that could go for over for 3 hours.

For the more adventurous angler, we offer trips to Corbetena and Banco, extending between 10 to 14 hours. Corbetena is a year-round home to marlin and tuna, thanks to its consistent bait presence that draws fish due to varying water temperature and clarity. When conditions align—ideal temperature and deep cobalt blue water—incredible catches are practically guaranteed. As for El Banco, situated around 50 miles offshore, it encapsulates the Pacific Ocean’s diverse fishing opportunities. This location stands as the pinnacle of fishing grounds near Nuevo Vallarta, with only one other spot outmatching it. Care to take a guess? Looking for rates to fish in Nuevo Vallarta,Mexico?
